Flight School Program
Mission field training environment with a low one-to-one instructor to student ratio
The SMAT Flight School provides a mission field training environment with a one-to-one instructor to student ratio to ensure you get the hands on instruction you need. Our aircraft training fleet consists of (2) CE-172, (1) CE-152, and (1) CE-172RG. We also offer tailwheel training in our converted CE-152.
- Private Pilot - 40 Hrs Total, 20 Hrs Dual
- Instrument Pilot - 40 Hrs instrument training, plus Private and 50 Hrs x-country PIC
- Commercial Pilot - 250 Hrs Total
- Certified Flight Instructor - 15.0 Hrs
Curriculum & Costs
Private Ground School - AVI 120
40 Instructional Hours
- Course Objective - Provide the student with the necessary Instruction, to meet the knowledge requirements for a private pilot certificate.
- Course Content - Classroom instruction including aircraft systems, aerodynamics, meteorology, regulations, performance, navigation, and flight maneuvers.
Total Cost $700.00 includes:
- Ground School (40 Hrs): $350.00
- Books & Supplies: $250.00
- Written Test: $100.00
Private Flight Lab - AVI 125
40 Flight Hours Min.
- Prerequisites - AVI 120
- Course Objective - Provide the student with the necessary skill, and aeronautical experience to meet the requirements for a private pilot certificate.
- Course Content - Ground and flight training including aircraft systems, aerodynamics, performance, navigation, and flight maneuvers.
Total Cost $4,400.00 includes:
- Flight Instruction: 30 Hrs @ $40/hr
- Aircraft Rental: 40 Hrs @ $80/hr
Flight Proficiency Lab I - AVI 135
50 Flight Hours Min.
- Prerequisites - AVI 125
- Course Objective - Provide the student with additional experience to broaden the student's knowledge of VFR cross-country skills, including pilotage and dead reckoning techniques.
- Course Content - Ground and Flight training on VFR cross-country flight.
Total Cost $5,300.00 includes:
- Flight Instruction: 20 Hrs @ $40/hr
- Aircraft Rental: 50 Hrs @ $90/hr
Instrument Ground School - AVI 200
40 Instructional Hours
- Prerequisites - AVI 125
- Course Objective - Provide the student with the necessary instruction, to meet the knowledge requirements for an instrument rating.
- Course Content - Classroom instruction including, aircraft systems, basic attitude instrument flying, navigation, regulations, procedures, and publications for operating IFR.
Total Cost $600.00 includes:
- Ground School (40 Hrs): $350.00
- Books: $150.00
- Written Test: $100.00
Instrument Flight Lab - AVI 205
40 Flight Hours Min.
- Course Objective - Provide the student with the necessary skill, and aeronautical experience to meet the requirements for an instrument rating.
- Course Content - Ground and flight training including, basic attitude instrument flying, navigation, procedures, and publications for operating IFR.
Total Cost $4,600.00 includes:
- Flight Instruction: 25 Hrs @ $40/hr
- Aircraft Rental: 40 Hrs @ $90/hr
Flight Proficiency Lab II - AVI 145
40 Flight Hours Min.
- Prerequisites - AVI 135
- Course Objective - Provide the student with additional knowledge and experience to broaden the student's knowledge VFR cross-country skills.
- Course Content - Ground and Flight training on VFR cross country flight.
Total Cost $4,600.00 includes:

- Aircraft Rental: 40 Hrs @ $90/hr
Commercial Ground School - AVI 210

- Prerequisites - AVI 200
- Course Objective - Provide the student with the necessary instruction to meet the requirements for a commercial pilot certificate.
- Course Content - Classroom instruction including aircraft systems, aerodynamics, meteorology, regulations, performance, navigation, and flight maneuvers.
Total Cost $600.00 includes:
- Ground School (40 Hrs): $350.00
- Books: $150.00
- Written Test: $100.00
Commercial Flight Lab - AVI 215
80 Flight Hours Min.
- Prerequisites - AVI 170, 200, 210
- Course Objective - Provide the student with the necessary skill, and aeronautical experience to meet the requirements for a commercial pilot certificate.
- Course Content -Ground and flight training including aircraft systems, aerodynamics, performance, navigation, and flight maneuvers.
Total Cost $9,050.00 includes:
- Flight Instruction: 40 Hrs @ $40/hr
- Aircraft Rental: 70 Hrs @ $95/hr 10 Hrs @ $80/hr

-__ 1.These prices reflect FAA and SMAT minimum flight hours. Students will be charged for any hours flown beyond these minimums.
-__ 2.Charts, Approach Plates, Medical exam fees, FAA Examiner fees, and Aircraft rental for FAA practical tests are not included in the flight program prices listed above.

-__ 4.Since the time to master new flight skills differs with each student, a student could expect to pay between $29,850 and $36,000 for the total cost of the program.
Elective Flight Experiences
The following electives are only offered as available:
Seaplane Flight Experience - AVI 155
8 Instructional Hours / 8 Flight Hours Min.
- Prerequisites - AVI 125
- Course Objective - Provide the student with the necessary skill, knowledge, and aeronautical experience to meet the requirements to operate a seaplane.
- Course Content - Ground and Flight Instruction on, Taxi procedures, normal/crosswind takeoffs, normal/crosswind/glassy water landings.
Tailwheel Flight Experience -AVI 180
10 Instructional Hours / 10 Flight Hours Min.
- Prerequisites - AVI 125
- Course Objective - Provide the student with the necessary skill, knowledge, and aeronautical experience to meet the requirements to operate a tailwheel aircraft.
- Course Content - Ground and Flight Instruction on, taxi procedures, normal/crosswind takeoffs, full stall/three point landings.
Glider Flight Experience - AVI 185
10 Instructional Hours / 10 Flight Hours Min.
- Prerequisites - AVI 125
- Course Objective - Provide the student with the necessary skill, knowledge, and aeronautical experience to meet the requirements for a private glider certificate.
